New Rules for the Mandatory Disclosure of Building Energy Efficiency

12th Nov 2009

From the second half of 2010, owners of commercial office buildings will be required to disclose energy efficiency ratings when they sell or lease their property.

This announcement was made today by the Environment Minister, Peter Garrett, and demonstrates the government’s ongoing commitment to improve the energy efficiency of commercial office buildings.

Under the mandatory disclosure scheme, building owners will need to provide a current Building Energy Efficiency Certificate (including a NABERS Energy base building star rating) whenever they are selling or leasing their property.  Certificates will be valid for 12 months and owners of non-compliant buildings will face a fine or prosecution.

Minister Garrett warned, "If you are planning on selling or leasing office space, the first NABERS Energy base building star rating can take time. I encourage building owners to start now to prepare for the introduction of this measure."
